At 2024-12-05 18:44 (UTC) today, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred near Cape Mendocino, California. This event has caused panic among local residents and drawn significant attention from the California government. Our institute—the GUI Institute of Earthquake Prediction—is a formally registered nonprofit organization in the United States dedicated to predicting major earthquakes worldwide. A few hours after the event, we conducted a preliminary study. We now issue the following opinions regarding this earthquake:

Our calculation and prediction:

Based on the earthquake catalog published by the USGS as of Eastern Time (2024-11-05T18:44), and applying Gu’s theoretical calculation model, our predictions are as follows:
Mainshock-Aftershock Type: This earthquake follows a mainshock-aftershock pattern. There will be no subsequent major earthquake of around magnitude 7. Everyone can rest assured.
Next Strong Aftershock Prediction: Strong aftershocks will continue for some time. Based on the limited data available as of Eastern Time 2024-11-05 T18:44, our analysis suggests that around midnight tonight (Eastern Time), within approximately one hour of 00:00 (PST 9:00PM, UTC-8), there will be a strong aftershock of about M4+ magnitude.
Ongoing Monitoring: Our institute will continue to monitor the subsequent developments of this earthquake and will promptly release further results as they become available. Please visit www.guiep.org for more info.
