Earthquakes are severe natural disasters and one of the ten major scientific challenges. Professor Jicheng Gu and his team at guiep.org are close to predicting mainshocks and have already successfully predicted aftershocks in several earthquakes.
Earthquakes are one of the most common natural disasters. Like the current plague covid-19, a destructive earthquake does not distinguish between national borders, cultures, race or gender and brings tremendous losses to human lives and property. However, the difference is that a pandemic only comes once in so many years, and scientists from all over the world will immediately mobilize to develop a vaccine and cure to combat it. But what about earthquakes? The mainstream seismologists in the world today believe that earthquakes occur unpredictably, given only a certain probability of happening. In a sense, it is as if epidemiologists gave up the development of the cure for the pandemic.
Prof. Gu firmly believe Earthquakes are Predictable, thus he and his team established GU Institute of Earthquake Prediction (GUIEP), the unique non-profit organization focusing earthquake prediction in the world so far, in Massachusetts USA in 2020. The top priority of the institute is to monitor and predict the forthcoming (Mag=8~9) California earthquakes to protect CA.
GUIEP has developed three methods to predict destructive earthquakes, and has successfully predicted a few earthquakes.
Firstly, Prof. Gu established the approach called Waiting-Time Method in order to predict the strong aftershocks.
Secondly, Prof. Gu initially defined the Physical Quantity Seismicity Index S, which quantitatively describes the intensity of a group of earthquakes in a certain spatiotemporal domain, and S is a three-dimensional tensor which contains much more physical information than magnitude M. Seismicity S by Professor Gu is another major revolutionary seismological concept nearly 90 years after Charles Francis Richter and Beno Gutenberg first proposed the Richter earthquake classification method MAGNITUDE in 1935.
Lastly, Prof. Gu not only theoretically demonstrated the physical existence of precursor waves before earthquakes, but also gave the complete and closed mathematical analytical solutions of seismic precursor waves.
